Welcome to the Duplicate File Finder Home Page

Thank you for looking at my Duplicate File Finder Project. It is still quite a simple utility, but serves a very useful purpose, finding duplicated files on your system that can take up valuable space.

Features:
  • Check files by any combination of checksum, size, and name (Note: standard is a hardcore checksum of every file, which does beg for improvements in it's efficiency!)
  • Options to ignore links and empty files
  • Add or remove directories or individual files for the search, including removeable media such as CD's, Zips, etc.
  • Unique "database" function (well, not any more, but it seems I was the first) allowing you to store information about previously examined files and use that information in future searches, avoiding the unnecessary reexamination of those files.
  • A progress window listing files that have been examined in real time, plus start and finish times of the search
  • Runs in Java, but it's not slow! (Figures for hardcore checksum of every file)
    • 110Mb/min on a K6-2/450
    • 240Mb/min on an Athlon 800
    • 440Mb/min on an Athlon 1.3GHz
    • 6.6Gb/min on an Athlon 64 X2 5000+
  • Lots of very nice future plans (around 40 new features for the fully finished product!)
  • Runs on any system that supports Java - Linux, BSD, Solaris, Windows, and others.

Duplicate File Finder is somewhat rough around the edges, but it works and serves its first and most fundamental purpose, it helps you find and remove duplicate files on Linux (and now Windows since version 1.2!).

The Never Ending Saga... Fate Steps In

Since my first Unix based implementation of Duplicate File Finder in 2001, I have had great plans and have a feature list for it that would leave almost no wish or desire unfulfilled, and some that probably haven't been even thought of yet. However, as you might see in the news archives, I have made several attempts to redevelop Duplicate File Finder into the tool it deserves to be. All of these attempts have met with failure :( Simply, the time to do it is missing. It also leaves a sence of failure in me that I'm not really able to accept.

More recently however, specifically at 9pm on 8 October 2008 in Vienna, Austria, I was hit by a car on controlled pedestrian crossing when I had green for the pedestrians. The only significant injury I have is that my right elbow was badly dislocated, severely damaging the ligaments of the joint, and a fracture right at the end of my ulna bone, a magnet resonance of the joint revealed a 7mm gap between the bones in the joint. The injury is bad, 9 weeks after the incident I still have severe pain and can't use my arm. The doctors are talking about as much as three years recovery time, and even then, I will not be able to use my arm as I did before. Needless to say, this has changed my life. (update: 15.12.2009: To pour salt in the injury, the insurance company's idea of "compensation" for my injuries is about 3,000 Euros despite the driver being found guilty of negligent driving causing serious bodily injury.) I'm now left to contemplate my future, and find a way to continue my life.

The result for Duplicate File Finder is simple. I'm giving up, at least for now. I don't see how I can continue, not under the current circumstances and not under the circumstances that will surround me in the coming years. It is a wish of mine to do it, and maybe one day I will get something done, but for now I have to worry about more important things in my life.

Software Patents Still Threaten Duplicate File Finder!
Despite the European Parliaments decision on 6 July 2005 to reject the European Comissions' proposed directive, Software Patents continue to threaten Duplicate File Finder. The pro patent lobby groups are already pulling themselves together to make another attempt to get a US style patent system introduced in Europe. Companies in the United States and Japan will be the major beneficiaries because they hold a total of around 75% of all global Software Patents, and small, independent European Software Developers such as myself will lose badly. Please take some time to inform youself about Software Patents and their effects at the Free Software Foundations SWPatent site and at NoSoftwarePatents.com. If you live in Europe, please become active against Software Patents!!!

Java 1.5 Users Please Note: Duplicate File Finder is known to not work correctly with Java 1.5. In particular, the window for the processing of found duplicates does not react. Please use either Java 1.4 or Java 1.6.
